The Sign of the Seahorse by Graeme Base The number 42 appears twice in the book, both times on a snail shell. What does it mean.? After I saw a few seahorse signs hidden in the pictures, I figured out that it must be a count of the number of seahorse signs. Base did a similar puzzle in The Eleventh Hour, where dozens of small mice were hid in the pictures. I have found 42 seahorse signs in the book, but I'm not satisfied that I did it properly. Some of the signs are the black graphic icons at the end of the chapters. Id be more confident if I found 42 hidden seahorse signs, but only about half can be considered hidden. It appears that every large painting has exactly one hidden seahorse sign in it. None of the small paintings have signs.
